Once upon a time, Eric Murphy was an IT Executive at The Original Cakerie — a great career, but one that had lost its spark. Craving a new challenge and a deeper sense of connection, he began dreaming of opening a café — one of those special places where people say, “Let’s grab a coffee” and conversations come to life.

Encouraged by a colleague, Eric bought a small roasting machine and set out to master the perfect espresso roast. Before long, his workshop smelled like a coffeehouse, and he quietly handed in his resignation just before Christmas 2014.

At the time, Eric was co-coaching his daughter’s ringette team with his friend Craig Williams. Craig loved the idea and offered to help. Soon, Eric was showing up at practices with a trunk full of coded coffee samples, handing them out to curious parents for feedback. One of those parents, Jenny Fechter, was immediately impressed. When she learned about Eric’s new venture, L’aromas, she offered her marketing and design expertise to help bring the brand to life.

And just like that, three friends — Eric, Craig, and Jenny — embarked on the adventure of launching a coffee roasting company from the ground up.

While searching for the perfect café space, Eric purchased a custom coffee trailer and even traded his executive BMW for a pickup truck to tow it. That first summer, the trio poured coffee at local markets, swim meets, and community events — dreaming up the future of L’aromas between customers. The response was incredible, and their dream gained momentum.

By summer 2015, Eric found the ideal first location: Petra’s Café in Tsawwassen. The long-loved neighborhood café wasn’t for sale — until a few heartfelt conversations led Petra to pass the torch. L’aromas officially opened its doors in July 2015.

Owning a café was both a dream come true and a crash course in entrepreneurship. With new recipes, fresh roasted coffee, and gradual renovations, L’aromas quickly earned a loyal following. As the café grew, so did the demand for baked goods.

When new ovens wouldn’t fit in the tiny kitchen, the solution sparked the next chapter: L’aromas Bakehouse — a dedicated bakery crafting handmade sourdough, croissants, and pastries for the cafés.

Soon after came a second café in South Surrey’s Ocean Park, supported by the Bakehouse and delivered by a new electric car. As wholesale baking contracts expanded, it became clear that L’aromas had outgrown its space. The next dream took shape: a larger headquarters combining a full bakery, coffee roastery, offices, and café all under one roof in Tsawwassen.

Then came the pandemic. Like many small businesses, L’aromas faced immense challenges — but through community support, creativity, and resilience, the team adapted. The bakery stayed open as an essential service, deliveries expanded, and construction on the new Coffee & Bakehouse continued.

After opening the flagship L’Aromas Coffee & Bakehouse, new opportunities followed — first in Richmond’s Terra Nova community, and then in the growing Southlands neighborhood of Tsawwassen. Most recently, the L’aromas team expanded its vision further with the opening of SkyCafé at Boundary Bay Airport — a full-service breakfast, lunch, and dinner concept that celebrates great food, community, and connection from morning to night.

At the heart of L’aromas is more than great coffee — it’s people. Within L’aromas, we strive to create a culture of growth, where team members are empowered to learn, lead, and build rewarding careers. Many of our café leaders and managers began as baristas, growing alongside the brand through mentorship, creativity, and shared purpose.

From a car trunk full of beans to multiple cafés, a thriving bakery, a roastery, and now SkyCafé — L’aromas has always been about connection, quality, and community. We continue to give back through fundraisers, sponsorships, and events that strengthen the neighborhoods we serve.

Looking ahead, L’aromas continues to dream big — expanding into new communities, nurturing local talent, and serving every cup with purpose, passion, and care.
